Focus 2010

I managed to thread myself through the Monday morning traffic yesterday to get to the NEC in Birmingham for the annual Focus-On-Imaging show for all things photographic.  The M6 was at standstill again with warning of long delays.  Luckily for me, the queue to get on the M6 was so long that I managed to divert and go through Coventry, avoiding much of the pain.

Focus 2010 was for me a rather underwhelming affair. The stands of ‘trainer extrodinaire’ Damien Lovegrove, my printing and presentational product supplier Loxley Colour and framing specialists Ultimat stood out amongst the weathered crowd.  2009 saw off some well known names in the photographic industry, not least Spicer Hallfield who had a massive stand last year.

But there was plenty of spending being done yesterday, with a noticeable amount of people walking around with new A3 printers.  I think the price point for these have reached a level where they are becoming much more appealing.

I myself splashed out on a light shaping honeycombe grid for my urban portrait work and I also have a new Bowens beauty dish to try out in the next few days for portrait work.

I will be incorporating some of Loxleys exciting new products for 2010 into my own product range for this year.  Loxley have some fantastic offerings – their canvas prints really are top quality and will look fantastic on living room walls throughout the country.

Woodland Portraits

Portrait of Megan, Swithland Wood, Leicestershire

I spent yesterday afternoon with Bethany and Megan walking around one of my favourite spots in Leicestershire – Swithland Wood.  With spring on the horizon I wanted to walk around the area again picking out some unique spots for my ‘Spring Portraits’.  With towering trees to diffuse the light and provide great backdrops, fences, gates and lots of fauna to incorporate into portraits, Swithland is ideal for a spring portrait shoot.

The Aviator

I spent last weekend booked into The Aviator in Farnborough for a busy working weekend.  The Aviator is a fantastic hotel located right on the perimeter road of Farnborugh Airfield (hence the name I guess).  The hotel is most definately avaition related which was great for me as a one time aviator and follower of all things aviation related.  With subdued  but funky lighting throughout the hotel it was a treat to be staying there.  The hotel would make a great venue for a fashion shoot. Maybe one day.  I managed to grab some photos using my trusty Sony Ericsson phone at an oh-so early o’clock.

Superfly Model Shoot

I spent last Saturday over at the Superfly nightclub in Leicester to shoot a few models for portfolios.  As I have said in previous posts Superfly is a great 3 story building full of cool looking backdrops for fashion shoots.  But the building was cold..very cold.  No doubt it costs a fortune to heat in the winter so we had to keep moving around to keep warm.  The models suffered more than I did, but we got some great images nevertheless.

I brought my heavy duty Bowens lighting with me but in the end only used my very portable Nikon SB-800 flash and lite EZYBox to soften the light.  Quick and easy to setup and easy on the back going up and down the stairs.

Looking forward to the next shoot.
